Stamford Tyres Malaysia (STM) recently visited the Sumitomo Rubber Thailand (SRT) factory in Rayong, Thailand for a dealers incentive trip. The four-day trip was educational for dealers and STM management as they witnessed for themselves the sheer vastness of SRT's 60-million square-foot facility.
Within that massive plot, which is located roughly 120km from Bangkok city, are three factories, two of which have existed since SRT's operations began in November 2006. The first plant manufactures high-performance radial tyres using the efficient "Taiyo" production system while the second adopts a more conventional method to produce tyres for vans and 4×4 vehicles.
Growing demand for agricultural tyres spurred the need for a third plant, which was eventually launched in 2014. The 13-million square-foot plant is responsible for the production of tyres and rubber crawlers for agricultural vehicles and solid tyres for forklifts.
On top of the exposure to SRT's manufacturing prowess, guests were also exposed to SRT's mission to be a socially responsible corporate group. This is evident from the factory's zero waste disposal policy and its various ways of reaching out to the community.
Among the VIP guests who came along for the factory visit were Toru Nagahata, President of SRT and also Cham Soon Kian, Executive VP & CEO of STM. Cham led a Malaysian contingent of 34 guests made up of representatives from 16 local dealers as well as STM staff.
